PostHeaderIcon GCT Carbon Rotor Blades

We are proud to anounce that GCT have appointed us there official Asian distributors for 2009-2010.

GCT have gained enormous experience from producing several tens of thousands of pairs of rotor blades with great success for various model helicopter manufacturers and distributors.

The latest production methods are used in order to offer the model pilot the very finest quality rotor blades obtainable. High-strength materials play the primary role, including glass and carbon filaments in woven cloth, roving and other special forms, plus one of the best epoxy resins money can buy. Inside the blade there is an accurate, computer-cut high-density foam core plus a precisely dimensioned lead weight, machine-grooved for security.

The materials are laid in the moulds according to a precisely calculated plan for each blade type, and then saturated with the correct quantity of epoxy resin, accurately measured by weight. The moulds are closed under high pressure and hardened over-night in an oven at the appropriate temperature. This hardening process at raised temperature gives the epoxy resin the hardness required, which in turn gives the blade the specified technical characteristics.

The painted finish is achieved using a 2-pack paint which is specially manufactured for us, sprayed directly into the moulds. The paint we use is UV-resistant, minimising the ugly yellowing tendency which is inherent to the polyester paint finishes which are still commonplace today.

At this stage the blades are removed from the moulds and cleaned up using fine abrasives. The hole in the root is bored using a special drilling jig and the brass sleeve pressed in. The blades are quality-checked, and even the tiniest of faults is sufficient to see them rejected out of hand. Manufacturing rotor blades in this way is pure manual work, but the reject rate is amazingly low for such exacting processes.

The production process is constantly monitored by a schedule of quality checks. Rotor blades have to cope with high rotational speeds and are therefore designed to absorb extremely severe tensile stresses. An ability to work effectively at high speed ensures direct control response, but please don’t try twisting a blade as excessive twisting by hand can lead to fracture; after all, such loads could never arise in flight. Rotor blades do not need to be particularly strong in terms of bending strength, as flight loads are low.

Rotors spin at high speeds and the very slightest imbalance leads to rough running and vibration which would annoy any pilot and give us any amount of hassle. In fact, the next stage is one of the most important in the production of rotor blades: dynamic balancing. For main rotor blades we adhere to a very strict specification which even takes into account the lead and lag of each individual blade. The permissible weight difference between balanced blades is specified, as also is the maximum balancing weight which may be fitted. All blades are balanced on a dynamic balancing device which we developed and built in-house. You will find a plastic plug on the underside of one blade of any pair; that is where we have fitted the balance weight, glued it in place and sealed the hole with the plug.

The precise criteria for the dynamic balancing procedure enable you to simply take the blades out of the pack, install them and head for the flying field, where you will enjoy the smooth running and true tracking of your GCT blades. We do the balancing - you do the flying! In general terms you may well find that minor adjustments are necessary to the helicopter mechanics if you switch to GCT blades from equivalents made by other manufacturers; simply read and observe the helicopter manufacturer´s instructions.

At this stage the selected pairs of blades are packed neatly in special packaging, designed with transit security in mind. Each pack includes a printed product description including safety notes, providing information about the type and size of the blades. Please read these safety notes carefully; it is in your own interests to observe them closely.

We wish you hours of pleasure and many successful flights with your GCT High-Tech rotor blades.
